@Hypatia
It no longer works, because if you've upgraded your VirtualBox from an older version, then the preserved old settings will be pointing to the wrong authentication module that doesn't exist anymore.

From your VirtualBox Manager, go to File > Preferences > General. There you'll find the VRDP Authentication Library pointing to something like VRDPAuth.so, which is no longer there in versions 4+. You need to change that to /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxAuth.so

After doing that, if you follow the instructions laid out by Jason in his post above, then you will discover that the external authentication works (again)!

You may also want to look into reposync, part of the package yum-utils:

Hi,
I am new virtual box user.I have encountered by a problem:
guest machine: windows Xp

I have made a vmdk using VMware-converter-4.0.1-161434 of my guest machine. I have created new profile in virtual box(VirtualBox-3.2.8-64453-Win) with this vmdk assigning sufficient memory. But when it is going to boot its giving following (green death )error:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer
if this is first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer...

check for virus on your computer . remove any newly installed hard drive and hard drive controller. check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. run chkdsk /f to check your hard drive corruption....

Anyone can help please??

Hi,
I am using partner.wsdl which points to "https://test.salesforce.com/services/Soap/u/18.0". But to use it in production I need to change it to "https://login.salesforce.com/services/Soap/u/18.0".

I am putting partner.wsdl in jar file and reading it
URL wsdlLocation = this.getClass().getClassLoader().getResource("META-INF/partner.wsdl");

If i try to put it in some hard drive physical location, I am not able to read wsdlLocation.
Could you please tell me how can i change end point url dynamically?

Thank You

Hi Jason,

I'm new to the world of VM's. I've been playing with virtual box for a bit and i'm keen to p2v a couple of our less critical servers. what sort of prep do you need to do on the server you want to virtualise before setting loose vm converter?

Thanks for sharing all your hard work with the rest of us.

This is regarding the question of how to change the ENDPOINT_ADDRESS_PROPERTY property.

I have now verified that the code in my previous post works. Here (below) is a working example of code that logs in with a Customer Portal user's credentials, and then asks for the server time.

Of course, you'll need to supply constants for your organization ID, portal ID, an user credentials. If you're logging in as a regular organization user, leave the organization & portal IDs unset, and append your security token to the password string instead.

BTW: <em>Thanks very much to Jason</em> for this article. I was completely stuck trying to make this work without knowing about the <code>xadditionalHeaders</code> option.

<code>
    public static void main(String[] args) {

        LoginScopeHeader scopeHdr = new LoginScopeHeader();
        scopeHdr.setOrganizationId( STEVEJ_DEV_ORG_ID );
        scopeHdr.setPortalId( STEVEJ_DEV_PORTAL_ID );

        try {
            SforceService service = new SforceService();
            Soap port = service.getSoap();

            Login parameters = new Login();
            parameters.setUsername( MEGACORP_ADMIN_USERNAME );
            parameters.setPassword( MEGACORP_ADMIN_PASSWORD );

            LoginResponse response = port.login(parameters, scopeHdr);
            LoginResultType result = response.getResult();
            System.out.println("Login was successfull.");
            System.out.print("The returned session id is: ");
            System.out.println(result.getSessionId());
            System.out.print("Your logged in user id is: ");
            System.out.println(result.getUserId() + " \n\n");
            ((BindingProvider) port).getRequestContext().put(
                            BindingProvider.ENDPOINT_ADDRESS_PROPERTY,
                            result.getServerUrl() );
            SessionHeader sessionHdr = new SessionHeader();
            sessionHdr.setSessionId(result.getSessionId());

            GetServerTimestamp tsParam = new GetServerTimestamp();
            GetServerTimestampResponse tsResponse =

        } catch (Exception ex) {

Regarding ENDPOINT_ADDRESS_PROPERTY, I'm in the process of trying to transliterate the code from quickstart.java into something that works with NetBeans, and here's what I've come up with. I'm not sure if it actually works yet, because I have not yet written the subsequent code to actually do something with it.

<code>
            LoginResponse response = port.login(parameters, scopeHdr);
            LoginResultType result = response.getResult();
            ((BindingProvider) port).getRequestContext().put(
                            BindingProvider.ENDPOINT_ADDRESS_PROPERTY,
                            result.getServerUrl() );

Thanks for the tip about the memory.

I used an old Virtualbox install, and it was pre-set to 384 MB, and the "Install Fedora" program would run for a second, then disappear.

I set the memory to 512, and I was able to install.

Thanks again,

I've got a brand new harddrive (removed from a new laptop) with win7 on it sitting in an external cradle. VirtualBox won't let me boot from the real disk; and vmconverter only runs from the live system ... do I have any alternative to booting into windows, installing the vmconverter on it, and following the directions here? Can't I leverage the existing linuxx64 to execute or convert a physical drive?

Glad you got it working. Since this article was done with 2.x it's probably a good idea to update it to more accurately describe the options as they now exist in 3.x.

A couple of clarifications: VirtualBox has an Import Appliance functionality. This is not what is needed here. Instead, go to File -> Virtual Media Manager, and click on Add. Then browse to the VMDK file. It will become the hard drive for the guest OS. Then create a new guest with however much CPU and RAM and devices that you want.

The other clarification is that on Vista and Windows 7 the "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" is called "ACPI x86-based PC" or "ACPI x64-based PC" instead. Also, you will not find this entry in the System Devices category. It is under the Computer category instead.

This worked perfectly for me virtualizing Vista 32-bit to a guest on top of Windows 7 64-bit. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this solution!!! You are the man! I just started a project to convert a C# program to Java using the Salesforce WSDL and was looking for a solution that would allow me to integrate the WSDL. As a matter of fact, the program was written originally in C# due to the fact that the WSDL integration is much easier in C# than Java. You just made my life a lot easier.

No Problem.
<ul>
	<li>Question 1: You understand correctly. Fedora is looking at your virtual drive only (Fedora12_Live.vdi) and not the underlying hardware.</li>
	<li>Question 2: The guest addition iso is there, but you need to install the guest operating system first. When that's done, you can mount the guest addition while the guest is running by hitting <code>host+d</code>, or selecting <code>Install Guest Additions</code> from the Device menu.</li>
</ul>

Hope that helps.

I have 2 questions RE: Fedora guest within VirtualBox.
I'd be grateful if you can help.

Question 1)
I installed VirtualBox on my host system (Windows Vista).
I was able to start Fedora 12 Live using the ISO File (Fedora-12-i686-Live.iso). I now wish to "Install to Hard Drive".
I have read the Fedora Install and User Guides but they do not address scenario where Fedora is within VirtualBox.
I choose "ReInitalize Drive" there is a warning
"YOU WILL LOOSE ALL DATA ON THIS DRIVE".
My understanding is this refers to the VIRTUAL Drive for the Fedora guest O/S (i.e. Fedora12_Live.vdi file) and will not in any way harm my host Windows Vista O/S or the data on my "real" harddrive.
Is this correct ? I'm a bit paranoid to do this unless I'm certain.

Question 2)
I want to install Guest Options, in particular I need Guest/Host file sharing capability. The documentation says I need to use the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso file and it should be in the VirtualBox installation directory- but I can't find it. Is this because I haven't yet installed to disk ? Is it because I'm using the "Live" version and not the full version ?

Thank You

Just to add that it works also under VirtualBox 3.0.12 and Ubuntu Karmic x64.
Another Tip for option 2: Add VRDP_AUTH_PAM_SERVICE="vrdpauth" to /usr/bin/VBox to make the change permanent and start the virtual boxes through init or upstart scripts

This procedure works with VirtualBox v3.0.

Though, you need to remove the VMware Tools if they were installed prior to opening in VirtualBox.

Also, I had to remove the machine from my AD Domain and add it back before I could use any AD accounts.

Hello, i have chosen the method with custom pam method, but I have got a different problem. I need to run VBoxHeadless machine under account A (on Gentoo Linux), but to use credentials from account B (also present on Gentoo). Hosts are Win XP SP3 and I can connect (rdesktop or MS RDP client) only when supplying account A credentials. I need to supply account B credentials. In log, it says following:

00:18:17.224 VRDPAUTH: User: [account2]. Domain: []. Authentication type: [External]
00:18:19.375 VRDPAUTH: external authentication module returned 'access denied'
00:18:19.375 VRDPAUTH: Access denied.

Jason, could u test this scenario when u have time? Thanks

I chose to create a standalone VM using a VMDK that was split on 2GB boundaries. The segmented VMDK was only necessary as I was writing the conversion to a FAT formatted disk. As the ultimate goal was to get the machine into VirtualBox, I selected the Destination type to be "Other Virtual Machine", and set the type of virtual machine to be a Workstation 6.x.

Hi,

I chose the 2nd option. When I run :

If you can't see your console with virt-viewer, change the kickstart bootloader stanza to include <code>console=tty1</code> as well as <code>console=xvc0</code>. That will allow the console to appear on the virtual frame buffer as well.
